On Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2023, Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota welcomed Dr. Liz Gulliford for a Cardinal Virtue lecture on “How Gratitude and Related Virtues Help Students and Teachers to Flourish.” This lecture presented gratitude as central to the other virtues and human flourishing. The Cardinal Virtue lecture was open to the entire Saint Mary’s community. Earlier in the day, Dr. Gulliford facilitated conversation with faculty on the virtues of servant leadership. The Second Annual Faith Based Convening took place, Sunday September 17, through Monday September 18, 2023. Dr. Greg Jones, president of Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, and Dr. Liz Gulliford, Associate Professor in Psychology at the University of Northampton spoke at the event. Saint Mary’s welcomed Dr. Kristin Melley, the executive director of Dominican Veritas Ministries, on September 16 to present to the inaugural cohort of students in the Catholic school leadership program. Among Dr. Melley’s many accomplishments, she has served as principal of Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, MA and the director of professional development at the Roche Center for Catholic Education at Boston College.

The School of Education hosted its Summer Institute on June 15 and 16 for candidates in the Education Specialist (Ed.S.) in Educational Administration program on the Minneapolis Campus. Supported by the $1.7 million grant received from the Kern Family Foundation, the Summer Institute featured nationally recognized speakers and formation activities aimed to equip participants to become leaders of character and lead schools of character. The school of education will host the Ed.S. Summer Institute for students in the Education Specialist (Ed.S.) program on June 15 and 16 at the University Center on its Minneapolis campus.  In previous institutes, over 75 educators have participated in a variety of presentations including Saint Mary’s virtue-based approach to professional ethics, Wise Leadership.
