The school of education welcomes Dr. Amy Johnston to facilitate “Relationships: The Real Priority in Education,” a full-day workshop as part of a new character-based professional development series for teachers and educational administrators. The workshop will take place on April 26, 2022 on the Minneapolis campus.
Dr. Amy Johnston will help educators understand the importance of relationships to a school’s culture and to learning. During this interactive professional development day, participants will discuss the importance of vulnerability in educators, delve into the critical need for a healthy adult culture, learn strategies to improve school culture, and discover ways to intentionally teach social and emotional skills that students need to navigate life. Educators will leave this session knowing why and how to prioritize relationships and character development in their schools. Six Continuing Education Units will be awarded to all administrators and teachers that attend the workshop.
Dr. Amy Johnston, an experienced teacher, counselor, and school administrator, holds master’s degrees in educational administration and counseling and an Ed.D. in character education and democratic school governance. Johnston received training from Dr. Marvin Berkowitz in his Leadership Academy in Character Education, and the knowledge gained there helped transform her school, which was named a National School of Character by character.org. She was an invited speaker at Tom Lickona’s Character Education Conference (CEC) in New York, the CHARACTERplus Conference in St. Louis, the CEC in Wisconsin, the National CEP Forum in Houston, the District 20 CEC in Colorado Springs, The HOPE Institute in Alabama, the AME Conference at Harvard University, and she has worked with school leaders in China and Dubai. She was named the St. Louis Area Middle School Principal of the Year and the Dean’s Awards for Excellence in Character Education and Excellence in Educational Leadership from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She currently does consulting work, teaches, and works on program development in the area of Servant Leadership at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
